Daniel William McGuire grew up on the Jersey Shore, and attended Virginia Military Institute on an NROTC scholarship. He graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1983, and entered the U.S. Marine Corps as a second lieutenant.
After tours overseas, he cleaned up the scene in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, before teaching at Officer Candidate School at Quantico, Virginia. While at Quantico, he met a lovely, liberal, Protestant, Democrat, Cowboy fan named Kristen West.
They fell in love, and got married in 1989.
Though she stubbornly clings to many vestiges of her girlhood, Daniel was her sponsor at the Easter Vigil in 1992 when she joined the Roman Catholic Church. Her catechetical experience in the RCIA convinced Daniel to pursue a masters in theology. (Who told you that no one prays the rosary anymore?!)
Dan retired from active duty as a Major in 2003 and, after a fun-filled cross country vacation, he completed a Ph.D. in theology at Marquette University in Milwaukee. His dissertation was on conversion in the work of Hans Urs von Balthasar.
There are eight McGuire children, with ages ranging from high school on down. He is Assistant Professor of Theology at the
University of Great Falls. He teaches Old and New Testament, Christology, Fundamentals of Theology, and Formation of Conscience. (Did you know you can take these classes using distance learning?)
Daniel has given many talks over the years to a wide variety of audiences, from catechizing confirmandi to entertaining his elders. If you'd like to contact him,
